چکیده

Due to the share nature of wireless medium, interference is the critic factor for the performance improvement in wireless mesh networks. In this paper, we address topology and traffic has the impact on the interference, and even routing, and the interference consists of two parts. One is topology-related interference. Another is traffic-related interference. In IEEE 802.11 based wireless mesh networks, topology-related interference is come from the hidden nodes, and quantified by the number of hidden nodes. Taking information from CTS frames, traffic-related interference is defined and quantified. With the integration of topology and traffic related interference, an interference-aware routing metric and protocol is proposed. In route selection, the proposed routing protocol selects the route with the least interference as the data transmission path. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol outperforms the other two protocols in terms of network throughput and end-to-end delay.

Architecting a High-Capacity Last-Mile Wireless Mesh Network

Despite availability of multiple non-overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz spectrum, most IEEE 802.11-based multi-hop ad hoc networks operate in a single channel. This substantially reduces the bandwidth available to each node due to interference between successive hops on the same path as well as between neighboring paths. Figure 1 depicts the severity of such interference. As a resu...

Interference-Aware and Cluster Based Multicast Routing in Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

Multicast routing is one of the most important services in Multi Radio Multi Channel (MRMC) Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). Multicast routing performance in WMNs could be improved by choosing the best routes and the routes that have minimum interference to reach multicast receivers. In this paper we want to address the multicast routing problem for a given channel assignment in WMNs. The channels...

Implementation of dynamic channel switching on IEEE 802.11-based wireless mesh networks

Interference makes it difficult for a wireless network to provide robust performance and could sometimes lead to transient failures. Dynamic channel switching (DCS) allows a wireless network interface (NIC) to operate in different frequency channels during different time periods without disrupting network connections that traverse the NIC. DCS enables a wireless mesh network to avoid frequency ...

Contention- and Interference-Aware Flow-Based Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks: Design and Evaluation of a Novel Routing Metric

As the popularity of IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) grows, end users of these environments demand better performance and quality of service (QoS). However, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of the IEEE 802.11 standard was not initially designed to provide either multihop or QoS capabilities. Therefore, the performance of IEEE 802.11-based WMNs is not optimal. One approach t...

Mesh Networks: a Model-based Approach

We address the problem of identifying high throughput paths in 802.11 wireless mesh networks. We introduce an analytical model that accurately captures the 802.11 MAC protocol operation and predicts both throughput and delay of multi-hop flows under changing traffic load or routing decisions. The main idea is to characterize each link by the packet loss probability and by the fraction of busy t...
